The company was founded in 1894 as Shaw & Copestake in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, by William Shaw and William Copestake. Copestake left shortly after, and Richard Hull joined in 1895. The name "SylvaC" is derived from a blend of Sylvan Works (the factory name) and Copestake.
