Offered for sale is a charming and well modelled Art Deco chimpanzee family group of three made in England by Sylvac and dating from around 1940/50. The largest chimpanzee sits on its hind legs and holds a carrot in one hand whilst resting the other on the ground and appears to be contemplating the carrot or distracted. There are two smaller figures, the smallest of which has their arms wrapped around itself. The figures are extremely well detailed and hand decorated in tones of brown. SylvaC is a beloved line of British ornamental earthenware renowned for its whimsical animal figurines, plant pots, and pastel glazes. Produced primarily between the 1920s and 1970s by Shaw & Copestake, it remains highly collectible today for its cheerful, nostalgic charm. The company was founded in 1894 as Shaw & Copestake in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, by William Shaw and William Copestake. Copestake left shortly after, and Richard Hull joined in 1895. The name "SylvaC" is derived from a blend of Sylvan Works (the factory name) and Copestake.
