Item Details
Offered for sale is a commemorative plate by C.W.S Longton in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Silverdale Equitable Industrial Co-operative Society Limited. The centre is transfer printed and decorated with roses, the border design is in relief and highlighted with gilt and gilt around the rim.
On the base is the Cws logo of a wheat sheaf and the motto 'Labor and Wait'. Labor is spelt in the American style without the 'U'.
This was quite intentional. The Cws was progressive in the liberal tradition, they were supporters of the Union in the American Civil War and were anti-slavery. This was reflected by taking their motto from the Us poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, 'A Psalm for Life'.
The last verse reads:
Let us, then, be up and doing,
with a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labor and to wait.
