Offered for sale is a "The Wife of Bath" figure. Part of the collection of Rye Pottery's hand-painted figures based on the pilgrims from Chaucer's renowned Canterbury Tales. "A worthy woman all her life, what’s more She’d had five husbands, all at the Church door Apart from other company in youth, No need just now to speak of that, forsooth." Rye Pottery’s "Wife of Bath " was the very first figure designed by Rye Pottery to be based on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The Wife of Bath is the only figure in the series modelled by sculptor& painter Gordon Davies and was originally conceived as a one-off character for Canterbury Cathedral’s gift shop. In her early days she was hand-painted only in Cobalt Blue & White, but her decoration now ties in with the range’s medieval colour palette of Cobalt Blue, Terracotta, earthy Browns and a soft Sherwood Forest Green." The driving design influences for this collection are Neville Coghill’s translation of Chaucer's original text and the few illustrations of the Pilgrims shown in the Ellesmere Manuscript. The perfect gift for Chaucer fans or medieval literature buffs alike. Their timeless quality allows them to fit into any interior style
