Offered for sale is a nice pair of hardwood Chinese water buffalo being ridden by young boys and presented on carved root wood bases.
The quality of the carving is exceptional, the hair on the buffalo is expressed in delicate striations, which at points spiral into subtle rosettes. The teeth of the buffalo are of bone, whilst the eyes are made of glass.
The figures are mounted on a carved naturalistic root wood bases, the rolling peaks and troughs there to convey the effects of water in a marsh.
The condition of the figures is generally very good, though there are a few bits of damage to the buffalo feet which do not really show too much when on the stands, however, everything else including the eyes and horns are perfectly fine.
