Kangxi Revival Period Crackle Glaze Vase

This is a Kangxi Revival Period blue & white vase, featuring a crackle glaze finish and etched brown borders to foot and neck. The brown mark on the base is Chenghua Nian Zhi - "Chenghua Period Made" . It was created in the early 20th century. The vase reflects the design elements characteristic of the Kangxi period, which includes intricate patterns and a traditional form. The crackle glaze adds a distinct texture and aesthetic to the piece. This incised mark say Chenghua Nian Zhi, meaning "Made during the Ming dynasty Chenghua period (1465-1487)", indicated by the four last characters of a full mark, omitting the two characters of "Ming dynasty. The reason is a bit complicated and needs to be understood in several steps. The period around 1900 is called by the Gotheborg members the "Kangxi revival period", since the ruler at that time, the Empress Dowager Cixi, was known to particularly admire the Kangxi period (1662-1722), during which the Chenghua period was highly regarded. Thus, during the Kangxi revival period around 1900, Chenghua marks were placed on wares of the revival period, some of which - like these with brown etched marks - in no way resembled anything made neither during the Kangxi period nor the Chenghua period.
