Offered for sale is a highly decorative, large Mason's Patent Ironstone China, tureen and two matching plates retailed by J.Allsup, 16 St Paul's Church Yard, London. I believe the pattern to be "Phoenix Bird" and it is decorated in the typical Mason's tones of gilded inky, colbalt blue, with stylised, pink , yellow and blue peony and chrysanthemum flowers and russet orange birds on a white ground. The finial is modelled as a gilded flower and it stands on a hexagonal foot both in the inky cobalt blue with matching handles.
The plates and tureen document the practice pursued by some of the smart London retailers of having their name printed on wares made to their order, rather than that of the manufacturer. These three items have the trade mark of J. Allsup of 16 St Paul's Church Yard, c 1837 - 1852.
St Paul's Church Yard had been a centre for the London ceramic retail trade since at least the early eighteenth century. For factories that didn't have a dedicated London show room their network of retail businesses in the capital was highly important. These retailers supplied ceramics to extremely discerning customers for whom shopping had become more than just a leisurely pastime. There were around 20 leading retailers in the early-19th century and Allsup was remembered by a writer in the Pottery Gazette in 1885 as one of 'The China and glass Dealers of London half a century ago'!
The tureen measures 270mm in height and 340mm across the handles. The plates have a diameter of 260mm.
Excellent condition, no chips or cracks, however there has been a small repair to the base of the finial which if you look at the photo's is very difficult to see.
