Offered for sale is a Gray's Pottery "Colt Texas Paterson" moustache cup & saucer. The cup is decorated with an image of the old American West and an image of a gun with the legend, Colt Texas Paterson 40 cal - 1836 in monochrome. The saucer is decorated with a verse "Since boxing is a manly game, and Britons recreation. By boxing we will raise our game 'Bove any other nation. Throw pistols, pomards, swords, a side. And all such deadly tools; Let boxing be the Britons pride, The science of their schools." The backstamp dates it between 1934 to 1961. The firm of A. E. Gray and Co. Ltd., whose American Clipper in full sail is a familiar trade-mark , holds a somewhat unique and special place in the story of modern ceramics. They have a reputation for the outstanding excellence of their decorated wares, yet they do not do any actual potting. The firm's reputation has been the result of the excellence of their hand-painted designs and the recognition that, as the founder recently observed: 'Pottery decoration is an art unto itself '
